EPO (Eiko Sato) is a Japanese singer-songwriter who debuted in 1980 with a cover of Sugar Babe’s “Down Town” and became, with Taeko Ohnuki and Mariya Takeuchi, one of RCA’s three leading women singers of the early 1980s.[1]
Career
Before her debut EPO sang backing vocals on Mariya Takeuchi’s “September” (1979).[1] Her first single, released on 21 March 1980, was a cover of Sugar Babe’s “Down Town”, arranged by Tetsuji Hayashi and Nobuyuki Shimizu; from 1981 it served as the ending theme of Fuji TV’s Oretachi Hyōkinzoku, making it widely known.[1] “U, Fu, Fu, Fu” (1983), a Shiseido campaign song, became her signature hit.[1]
Later work
EPO wrote for other singers, including Chika Takami, moved to London and signed to Virgin in 1990, and returned to Japan in 1991; she later trained as a counsellor and hypnotherapist alongside her music.[1]
