Tatsuro Yamashita is a Japanese singer-songwriter, arranger and producer, widely described as the architect of city pop. A meticulous multi-instrumentalist and studio craftsman, he built a sound out of American soul, doo-wop harmony and West Coast production, and has released more than 50 singles across a career of five decades.[1]
Early life and Sugar Babe
Yamashita was born in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, in 1953.[1] In 1973 he formed the band Sugar Babe with Taeko Onuki and Kunio Muramatsu.[2] Its only album, Songs, was released on 25 April 1975 on Eiichi Ohtaki’s Niagara label, together with the single “Down Town”.[2] The band announced its breakup in February 1976 and played its final shows at Ogikubo Loft that spring.[2]
Solo career and breakthrough
Signing to RCA, Yamashita released his solo debut Circus Town in 1976, the same year he joined Ohtaki and Ginji Ito on Niagara Triangle Vol. 1.[1] Commercial success arrived with “Ride on Time” (1980), written as the song for a Maxell UD cassette-tape television campaign.[3] It reached No. 3 on the Oricon chart — his first top-ten single — and the album of the same name went to No. 1.[1][3] For You (1982), opening with “Sparkle”, consolidated his reputation as the genre’s pre-eminent studio artist.
“Christmas Eve”
First released on Melodies (1983), “Christmas Eve” reached No. 1 when it returned to the charts in 1990 and has re-entered the Japanese charts every holiday season since — more than 35 consecutive years — with sales approaching two million copies.[1]
Producer and collaborator
Yamashita married Mariya Takeuchi in 1982 and has produced and arranged her records since, including Variety (1984), which he produced and largely arranged.[1][4] Ray of Hope (2011) topped the Oricon albums chart, demonstrating his enduring popularity in Japan.[1]
