Toshiba EMI was a Japanese record company, founded in 1960 as Toshiba Musical Industries, whose roster included the Express label and Yumi Matsutoya.[1][2]
History
Toshiba Musical Industries was founded in Tokyo on 1 October 1960 and licensed Columbia (UK) titles from 1962; EMI bought a 50% stake in October 1973 and the company became Toshiba EMI.[1] Express was among its labels.[1] Yumi Matsutoya’s 1982 album Pearl Pierce, a No. 1 on Oricon, was issued by Toshiba EMI and was the company’s first CD release.[2]
Later years
EMI raised its share to 55% in 1994 and took full ownership when Toshiba sold its remaining stake in 2007, renaming the company EMI Music Japan.[1] On 1 April 2013 it was absorbed into Universal Music Japan, continuing as the sublabel EMI Records Japan.[1]
