Alfa Records was the Tokyo label founded by composer-producer Kunihiko Murai, home to Yellow Magic Orchestra, Casiopea and Minako Yoshida, and one of the most influential studios and labels of the city pop era.[1]
History
Murai founded the publisher Alfa Music in 1969 and launched Alfa Records as an independent label in 1977.[1] Its roster included Yellow Magic Orchestra and its members Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi, as well as Yumi Arai, Casiopea and Minako Yoshida.[1] A U.S. subsidiary opened in 1980 and closed in 1982.[1]
Later years
Alfa scaled back in 1998 and stopped producing records; Sony has held the rights to the catalogue since 2001.[1] Alfa also helped found Moon Records in 1982.[2]
