Ayumi Ishida was a singer and actress whose 1968 single “Blue Light Yokohama” topped the Oricon chart, and whose 1977 album Our Connection with Tin Pan Alley is an early landmark of urban pop.[1][2]
Singing career
Born Yoshiko Ishida in Sasebo, Nagasaki, on 26 March 1948 and raised in Ikeda, Osaka, she made her stage debut in 1961 and her recording debut with Victor in April 1964. After moving to Nippon Columbia she released “Blue Light Yokohama” on 25 December 1968; it reached No. 1 on Oricon and sold some 1.5 million copies, followed by hits such as “Anata nara Dō Suru” (No. 2, 1970) and “Sabaku no Yō na Tokyo de” (No. 3, 1971).[1][2]
Our Connection and later years
In 1977 she released Our Connection, credited to Ayumi Ishida & Tin Pan Alley Family, an urban-sounding album influenced by the new music of the time; it was digitally remastered and reissued in 2013. She later recorded for Alfa (1981–1984) and became a leading film actress, winning Best Actress at the Blue Ribbon Awards for House on Fire. She died in Tokyo on 11 March 2025, aged 76.[1][2]
