Koki Ito is a Tokyo session bassist best known for playing on most of Tatsuro Yamashita’s recordings and concerts from 1979 onward.[1]
Early career
Born in Arakawa, Tokyo, Ito played piano as a child, brass-band instruments in junior high and drums and guitar in high school, switching to bass in his early twenties when bandmates needed a bassist. In 1977 he formed Magical City with keyboardist Hiroshi Shinkawa, drummer Jun Aoyama and guitarist Motoaki Makino and began working professionally.[1]
With Tatsuro Yamashita and others
Ito met Tatsuro Yamashita in 1979 and went on to take part in most of his recordings and live shows. His session credits also include Mariya Takeuchi, Yumi Matsutoya, Masayoshi Takanaka, Eiichi Ohtaki, Taeko Ohnuki, Hiroshi Sato, Miki Imai and Minako Honda, among many others.[1] In 2002 he joined NELSON SUPER PROJECT, a nine-piece band of Yamashita’s support musicians, and co-produced music with Makoto Matsushita, with whom he later formed the ambient project NEBULA and Future Days in 2007.[1]
Later work
In 1990 he formed the rhythm unit A・I with Jun Aoyama, and in 1999 the group SEVEN with Kazuyoshi Saito. In 2008 he founded his own label, BASS&SONGS, releasing his first solo album, Sometime Somewhere Introducing Koki Ito Official Bootlegs vol.1.[1]
