Shigeru Suzuki is a Japanese guitarist, a member of Happy End and Tin Pan Alley, whose slide and lead guitar can be heard on many of the records that founded city pop, from Yumi Arai’s Cobalt Hour to Taeko Ohnuki’s Sunshower.[1][2][3]
Happy End and Tin Pan Alley
Invited by Haruomi Hosono and Takashi Matsumoto, Suzuki joined Happy End as a teenager; the band made three albums before splitting at the end of 1972.[1] In 1973 he formed Caramel Mama with Hosono, Tatsuo Hayashi and Masataka Matsutoya, renamed Tin Pan Alley a year later, which became the leading session collective of the era, especially on Yumi Arai’s records.[1][2]
Solo career
His solo debut Band Wagon (1975) was recorded in Los Angeles with American session players, and Lagoon (1976) in Hawaii.[1] Further albums followed through White Heat (1979).[1] He also played on Taeko Ohnuki’s Sunshower (1977).[3] Fender released a signature Stratocaster modelled on his 1962 guitar in 2020.[1]
