CBS/Sony was a Tokyo record company founded in March 1968 as a 50/50 joint venture between Sony and the American CBS to release CBS music in Japan; it is the forerunner of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan).[1]
History
The venture was proposed in 1967 by Harvey Schein of Columbia Records International; Sony co-founder Akio Morita was its first president and Norio Ohga, part of management from the start, became president in 1970.[1] The company traded as CBS/Sony Records until 1983, when it became the CBS/Sony Group.[1]
Later years
In January 1988 Sony acquired the CBS Records Group and the half of CBS/Sony it did not own, and in March 1988 the company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment (Japan).[1] It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group, operating independently of the US-based Sony Music Entertainment.[1]
