Misslim is the second studio album by Yumi Arai (later Yumi Matsutoya), released on 5 October 1974. Arranged by Masataka Matsutoya with the Tin Pan Alley circle, it reached No. 8 on the Oricon LP chart and stayed on it for 102 weeks.[1]
Background
The title joins “Miss” and “Slim”, a nod to Arai’s slim figure at the time; the cover was shot at Kajiko Kawazoe’s house, with her grand piano.[1] The lead single “Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta Nara”, released on 20 April 1974, was re-recorded for the album along with its B-side “Mahō no Kagami”.[1]
Recording
Masataka Matsutoya arranged every track and played keyboards, with Haruomi Hosono on bass, Shigeru Suzuki on guitar and Tatsuo Hayashi on drums.[1] The album marked Tatsuro Yamashita’s first work with Arai as chorus arranger and singer — a collaboration that ran until Olive (1979) — and Sugar Babe, Minako Yoshida, Akiko Yano and Taeko Ohnuki all sang backing vocals.[1]
Legacy
The album version of “Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta Nara” became the ending theme of the Japanese release of Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989).[1] Bernie Grundman remastered the album for a CD reissue on 26 April 2000.[1]
