Yurie Kokubu is a Japanese singer whose debut album, Relief 72 Hours (1983), produced by Tetsuji Hayashi, is regarded as a cornerstone of 1980s city pop.[1]
Career
Trained in classical piano and voice, Kokubu sang for television before joining Yoshihiro Naruse’s band Quyz. Tetsuji Hayashi heard a Quyz recording, hired her and produced her debut, Relief 72 Hours (1983).[1] She married composer Masaki Iwamoto, who produced Steps (1987) and Silent Moon (1990).[1]
Later work
Kokubu sang with Shambara, a band formed in 1989 by Casiopea’s Tetsuo Sakurai and Akira Jimbo, deputised as a vocalist on Tatsuro Yamashita’s 1998–99 tour, and from 1996 recorded Christian music.[1] Relief 72 Hours appears in Hitoshi Kurimoto’s 2022 book on city pop.[1]
