Miho Nakayama was a Japanese singer and actress, one of the most popular idols of the late-1980s “golden age”, whose Toshiki Kadomatsu-produced recordings brought city pop production into the idol mainstream.[1][2]
Career
Nakayama debuted on 21 June 1985 with the King Records single “C” and the film Be-Bop High School, winning the Japan Record Award for Best New Artist that year.[1] Kadomatsu produced her 1986 single “Catch Me”, her first Oricon weekly No. 1, and the February 1988 album Catch the Nite, her first studio album to top the weekly album chart.[2] Other writers of the period included Kyohei Tsutsumi, Tetsuya Komuro, Cindy, and Anri, who composed “Virgin Eyes” (1989).[2]
Later career and death
Nakayama scored eight Oricon No. 1 singles, including the million sellers “遠い街のどこかで…” (1991) and “世界中の誰よりきっと” (1992, with Wands), and won several Best Actress awards for the film Love Letter (1995).[1] She died at her Tokyo home on 6 December 2024, aged 54; a public memorial was held at the Tokyo International Forum in April 2025.[1]
