Anri (born Eiko Kawashima) is a Japanese singer-songwriter whose bright, beach-bound records of the early 1980s made her the face of what Japanese listeners called “resort pop”.[1]
Debut
Born in Yamato, Kanagawa, in 1961, Anri debuted on For Life Records in 1978 with “Olivia o Kikinagara”, written by Amii Ozaki.[1]
Timely!! and “Cat’s Eye”
Toshiki Kadomatsu produced Timely!! (1983), which reached No. 1 on Oricon.[2] Its single “Cat’s Eye”, the first opening theme of the anime of the same name, spent four weeks at No. 1, and “Kanashimi ga Tomaranai” (I Can’t Stop the Loneliness) reached No. 4.[1]
Later career
Anri sang “Furusato” at the closing ceremony of the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and began a long collaboration with guitarist Lee Ritenour in 2002.[1] Her records have been widely sampled by vaporwave and future funk producers, and several albums were reissued in 2023. She lives in Los Angeles.[1]
