Omega Tribe was a Japanese band project led by producer Koichi Fujita whose summery, synth-polished records — first with singer Kiyotaka Sugiyama, then with Carlos Toshiki — are among the definitive sounds of mid-1980s city pop.[1]
Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe
The first incarnation grew out of the band Cutie Panchos, formed in 1978, and was active from 1983 to 1985 with Kiyotaka Sugiyama (vocals), Shinji Takashima and Kenji Yoshida (guitars), Toshitsugu Nishihara (keyboards), Takao Oshima (bass) and Keiichi Hiroishi (drums).[1] Producer Koichi Fujita and composer Tetsuji Hayashi shaped the records, from Aqua City (1983) to Another Summer (1985).[1]
Breakup
The band split in 1985 at the height of its popularity, partly from frustration at the production team’s reliance on studio musicians; First Finale (1985) closed the era.[1]
Later incarnations
Fujita relaunched the project as 1986 Omega Tribe with Brazilian-Japanese singer Carlos Toshiki, later renamed Carlos Toshiki & Omega Tribe, which released six studio albums before disbanding in 1991.[1]
