Mayo Shono is a Japanese singer-songwriter from Osaka whose 1978 hit “Tonde Istanbul” took her to NHK’s Kōhaku Uta Gassen, and whose late-1970s and early-1980s records sit on the boundary of new music and city pop.[1]
Career
Shono debuted on Nippon Columbia in 1976 with the album Atelier.[1] “Tonde Istanbul”, released on 1 April 1978, became her biggest hit: it won the Nakayama Shinpei Award at the 20th Japan Record Awards, and she made her first Kōhaku appearance that year.[1] She continued recording through the 1980s with albums such as Exotic (1983) and Beni Hotel (1984).[1]
