Junko Ohashi was a Japanese singer whose powerful, soul-inflected voice carried hits such as “Tasogare My Love” (1978) and “Silhouette Romance” (1981), and whose late-1970s albums are now collected as city pop.[1][2]
Career
Born in Yūbari, Hokkaido, Ohashi debuted with Feeling Now (1974); “Paper Moon” (1976) became her first hit.[1] Her breakthrough came in 1978 with “Tasogare My Love”, the theme of a TBS drama, which won a Gold Award at the Japan Record Awards.[1] In 1979 she married composer Ken Sato, whom she had met at Yamaha.[1]
“Silhouette Romance”
“Silhouette Romance” (1981) reached No. 7 on Oricon, sold more than 500,000 copies and won Best Song at the 24th Japan Record Awards.[1][2] Overseas listeners have since gravitated to deeper cuts such as “Telephone Number” and “Sweet Love”.[2]
Later life
Ohashi paused in 2018 after a cancer diagnosis, returned in 2019 with the cover album Terra 3, and died in Tokyo on 9 November 2023, aged 73.[1]
