Hiromi Iwasaki is a Japanese singer and actress, one of the defining pop vocalists of the 1970s and 1980s, with two million-selling singles: “Romance” (1975) and “Madonna-tachi no Lullaby” (1982).[1]
Debut
Born in Kōtō, Tokyo, in 1958, Iwasaki won a recording contract on the TV talent show Star Tanjō! and debuted with Victor in April 1975.[1] Her second single, “Romance”, spent three weeks at No. 1 and sold over a million copies; “Sentimental” followed it to the top.[1]
1980s
Into the 1980s her records moved toward a more adult, studio-polished sound. “Sumire-iro no Namida” (1981) won Best Vocal Performance at the Japan Record Awards, and “Madonna-tachi no Lullaby” (1982) returned her to No. 1 with sales over a million.[1]
Stage
Iwasaki moved increasingly into musical theatre, playing Fantine in the 1987 Japanese production of Les Misérables, and has continued to record and perform. Her younger sister, Yoshimi Iwasaki, is also a singer.[1]
