Etsuko Sai is a Japanese singer from Tokyo who debuted in 1984 on Teichiku’s Continental imprint and recorded a run of West Coast–flavoured city pop albums through the late 1980s.[1][2]
Career
Born in Nakano, Tokyo, Sai studied music and dance in Los Angeles after graduating from Rikkyo Jogakuin High School, and debuted in 1984 with the album Reach Out.[1] Her second album, All I Need, released on 21 March 1985, was produced by Tim Weston and recorded in Burbank, California, with arrangements by Chris Boardman and Bill Champlin and a session band including drummer Carlos Vega.[2] Further albums followed with Delication and Passio (both 1986), Unknown Things (1987) and In Bloom (1989), before later releases on Apollon in the mid-1990s.[1]
Other work and reissues
Sai sang the ending theme “海よりも深く” for the anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam and recorded the duet “永遠のモーニング・ムーン” with Toshinobu Kubota for NHK’s Minna no Uta.[1] Her albums were reissued on CD in 1990 and 1994, and in 2018 Tower Records’ Tower To The People series reissued Passio with a new remaster and bonus tracks.[1]
